Thank you for your interest in the Schamberger Foundation. In this section, we would like to inform you about
- the areas we support,
- our priorities in collaborations,
- and the process for obtaining funding.
We are committed to the principle of cleary defined responsabilities and accountability on both sides (the foundation and institution receiving funding). We value reliable partners who can offer a long-term perspective for projects but also for projects with a limited durations (“temporary partners”). Our funding is restricted to institutions for projects in the areas of science and research, and social issues, as defined below.

Science and research
Prehistoric archaeology/prehistory and early history: From the first tools made of stone around 2.5 million years ago to early history
Classical Archaeology: The focus is on the legacies of the ancient world from the Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans in historical times (roughly between the 2nd millennium BC and the 5th century AD). Classical archaeology also includes Aegean prehistory, which eamines Cycladic, Minoan, and Mycenaean finds, and Etruscology.
Provincial Roman archaeology: Located at the interface between prehistory/ early history and classical archaeology, focusing on the Roman provinces as a research topic.
Prehistory and early history: History of the cultural development of humans in Europe from the earliest times to the beginning of the High Middle Ages in Central Europe (roughly 1050).
Near Eastern Archaeology: Focuses on the cultures of the Near East, essentially the area of present-day Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan (Babylon, Assyria, Sumer, etc.), but also includes successor states (like Turkmenistan, etc.) from approximately the 11th millennium BC to the 7th century AD.
Social causes
We support projects in the areas of education, training, and assistance for children, young people, and the elderly. We are particularly committed to supporting minorities whose concerns are rarely heard in society.
Two-step application process
- Screening based on the online application form; response within 4 weeks
- The prerequisite for funding is a meeting in person. Following further clarification, the Board of Trustees will take a decision and reply within 1 week after the face-to-face encounter.
- Decisions by the Board of Trustees are taken twice a year; in spring and autumn. More specific dates on demand.
- No explanations are given for rejections.
